چکیده

Male and female college students played the commercial game Memory TM, which required them to recall the location of previously viewed items, and also completed a 20item mental rotation task. As is typical, males performed better than females (d = .67) on the mental rotation task. In contrast, females outperformed males by a large margin (d = .89) on the memory task. Performance on the two tasks was correlated for females, but not for males. The reversal of sex differences between tasks suggests that spatial ability is not a unitary trait and that different kinds of spatial processing may have been important for males and females in the EEA (environment of evolutionary adoptedness). The Memory TM game appears to mimic the cognitive demands of foraging better than previous spatial memory tasks. © Elsevier Science Inc., 1997

Interaction of sensory experience and age in spatial memory performances

During a critical period of postnatal age sensory experience has a profound effect on maturation of visual cortical wiring. Electrophysiological evidence is indicating a substantial effect of visual deprivation on the visual cortical response properties. In this study we evaluated effect of light deprivation during a limited time of postnatal age on two aspects of spatial (working and reference...

Spatial adaptations for plant foraging: women excel and calories count.

We present evidence for an evolved sexually dimorphic adaptation that activates spatial memory and navigation skills in response to fruits, vegetables and other traditionally gatherable sessile food resources. In spite of extensive evidence for a male advantage on a wide variety of navigational tasks, we demonstrate that a simple but ecologically important shift in content can reverse this sex ...

Effect of Ovariectomy on Reference Memory Version of Morris Water Maze in Young Adult Rats

Background: The effect of ovariectomy and accompanying sudden loss of circulating gonad hormones on spatial learning performance in the young adult rats was examined. We hypothesized that spatial learning and memory in a considerable number of women who undergo a surgical menopause and estrogen deprivation before their natural menopause be impaired. Methods: In this study, we used 26 Wistar ra...

The spatial learning and memory performance in methamphetamine–sensitized and withdrawn rats

Objective(s): There is controversial evidence about the effect of methamphetamine (METH) on spatial memory. We tested the time- dependent effects of METH on spatial short-term (working) and long-term (reference) memory in METH –sensitized and withdrawn rats in the Morris water maze. Materials and Methods: Rats were sensitized to METH (2 mg/kg, daily/5 days, SC). Rats were trained in water maze ...
